World History of Hockey - Modern hockey was originated in England in 14th century. Games played with curved sticks and a ball can be found in the histories of many cultures dating back to 3000 B.C.. The Persian,Egyptians,Greeks and Romans have left evidence of an activity consistent with playing a game with stick and ball.The rules of modern hockey were first codified in England and Scotland,where Shinty(is a team game played with sticks and a ball) was very popular in the late 18th century.The Blackheath club in London was the first club to be founded in 1861 and the first official match was played many years later. England and Ireland were first two country who played their first match in 1894. The game hockey was introduced for the first time in 1900, and became an event of Olympics in 1908. International Hockey Federation ( IHF) was founded in 1924 by seven European countries. Today, it has 119 member nations. World cup hockey was started in 1971 for men and in 1974 for women.

Indian History of Hockey - Talking about hockey in India , the first hockey club was formed in Calcutta in 1885-86 and soon Bombay and Punjab followed the suit. Making its Olympics debut in the 1928 Amsterdam games the Indian hockey team won six straight olympic gold medals from 1928 to 1956 ,while winning 24 consecutive matches.This was the golden era of Indian Hockey.The two other gold medals for India came in 1964 Tokyo Olympics and the 1980 Moscow Olympics.The main governing body of hockey in India is" Hockey India". It was founded in 2009 just after dismissal of Hockey Federation of India in 2008.
